Background
Melbourne IT is a world leader in domain name registrations and related online business solutions. Established in 1996, and listed on the ASX in 1999, the company has experienced rapid growth through the delivery of high value online solutions and outstanding customer service.
Melbourne IT began registering .com.au domain names in 1996 and in April 1999 was accredited by ICANN to provide registrar services in the .com, .net and .org domain spaces. Today, Melbourne IT manages more than 6 million domain names and is a truly global domain name registrar which supplies more than 40 different domain name types to customers across the globe.
In addition to its strong organic growth, Melbourne IT has also expanded its business through strategic acquisitions. In 2003, it purchased New Zealand-based domain name registrar, Domainz, which offers corporate domain management, reseller and direct domain services into the fast growing New Zealand market.
Opportunity
Melbourne IT had 32 J2EE applications that where deployed on BEA WebLogic application server. Melbourne IT proposed to migrate these applications to the JBoss application server. The applications implemented a mixture of J2EE technologies including EJB Session and Entity beans, JMS, Message Driven Beans, and Web Services using Apache Axis, XFire, and WebLogic web services.
Whilst most of the applications where developed according to J2EE standards, some rework was required in order to deploy these applications onto JBoss.
Solution
base2Services was engage to deliver the Migration services. The key deliverables of this engagement where to Standardise the build process, Migrate all xdoclet tags from BEA to JBoss and Migrate Authentication models to JBoss.
The entire migration was delivered in 45 days and was over the Christmas Season.

Benefits
The Migration delivered more than just the necessary components to get the applications working, it delivered an entire JBoss solution, removing all need to continue with BEA licensing substantially reducing operational costs. This was due to the ability of the service provider but also due to the out of the box features of JBoss Application Server. JBoss provides a true application server capability unseen before in other Application Server style systems.
